I just shared my story of what introduced me to opal in a youtube comment on the latest video of Roy's. However, as they say, life's a journey. In that journey we take side trips that can have meaningless or very profound impacts on us and the first opal I came across as an eleven year old is of the latter. I'm totally transfixed by Australian opal and Ethiopian honeycomb opal also. Not because of the financial value. An opal has the ability to take me places. I can stare and look into one for what feels like hours sometimes. The depths, flashes, patterns are so entrancing that I go into a somewhat meditative state, where my thoughts can wander and just as scents and music can induce a memory to arise from a land of bitter-sweet nostalgia, sometimes the colours of opal can have the same effect. I have synæsthesia and certain colours, upon them flashing or dancing onto my optic nerve, can make me taste and smell the most wonderful things. Weird, for sure. Wonderful? Absolutely.
